Stay away from General Assembly. Their "admissions" department will take anyone regardless of background and convince them there's a high likelihood of job placement. They'll say anything to get your tuition $$$. In the field of data science, only having a boot camp completion/"diploma" is looked negatively by employers unless you also have a Masters in CS or Math. Not only does General Assembly NOT explain this market dynamic to any new students they also don't provide you with enough skills to even come close to the requirements Data Science hiring managers are looking for. GA is a cash grab with questionable ethical practices that puts student success last.
I attended the UX design bootcamp at General Assembly and am so grateful for my experience. As someone pivoting from another sector in tech, I really appreciate how intense the bootcamp was. Yes, the cost can be steep but you're taking into account the quality of teaching, the full time program and the number of portfolio ready projects that you will have at the end of it. Also don't forget, you can claim tuition on your taxes to offset cost after you start working. Dan and April were amazing instructors and I learned so much from the both of them. Their experience and years in the design world really gave them the impactful skills and knowledge to teach people such as myself who had no background in design. The career support was far more than I had expected and I really appreciated the care, compassion and advice that George gave. There is also a huge community aspect of the bootcamp; something that I am so thankful for since I took the course and started job hunting during the midst of the pandemic. Overall, the bootcamp helped set me on my new career path. It requires hard work and commitment but the results are truly worth it in my honest opinion.
General Assembly was one of the best decisions I made in my life. Everyone was so helpful, from the staff to the instructors and TA's and there's also an amazing career coach. I honestly didn't want the course to end. It's a really good learning environment full of amazingly skillful and welcoming people that are always available to chat, discuss ideas & guide you... I also ended up making friendships at GA! I totally recommend it and 5 stars are not enough to describe how good this school is. You learn the theory, put it in practice, make meaningful connections, work on your portfolio and get really prepared to succeed in landing a job in your field of choice!
Making a Career transition was a hard decision to make. I first attended some intro nights to help ensure GA was a good learning environment for me. In 2019 I took the UXDI course for 3 months with Dan. Dan was probably one of the best teachers iv had in my professional career. Their care for the students well being and their ability to cater to all learning styles was one of the keys to my success. Not only did I learn the skills to land my dream job, I gained a large network of colleagues and friends that offer support at all levels of your career.
The support system is incredible at General Assembly! The instructor I had during my cohort and my fellow cohort career changers have been such an incredible support during and since my graduation from GA. I learned a lot from my UX immersive and have just loved the experience after with even connecting with folks outside of my cohort and ones that have come before or after me. The community at GA is one of my favorite things where you can learn from one another and share in your journey. The career coaches are always there to help you if you have any questions after graduation as well! The price is on the steeper side which is why I gave it 4/5 otherwise the experience itself was great! That said, GA really has a lot of helpful resources to provide you during your job hunt so I'm sure it all pays itself off at the end of the day!
I took the SEI bootcamp at GA and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I wanted a career change and took the biggest risk in the middle of the pandemic to kick-start that process. My instructors Alex, Aidan, Denis and David were phenomenal in teaching me the entire MERN stack and in the end I had 4 full-stack projects for my portfolio. Post-graduation, my career coaches Zoe and George were crucial in me landing an amazing position with a company. They helped by giving me referrals and answering any tough questions about the interview process as they come from a recruiting background. The one thing that stood out to me about GA was that they cared about my post-course journey. They held weekly meetings and always reached out to see how my job search was going. GA provided all the skills and support for me to switch careers and I wanted to thank them for that!
I have been attending a few workshops at GA, so far so good! My favourite one was intro to Digital Marketing by Josh Doner. He was very engaging, had a case to practice for the audience, shared his projects and professional experiences. I highly recommend the event and the instructor! GA events give a great opportunity to connect with other industry professionals, gain exposure to the new skills, get a taste of different fields and then choose your own.
