"The Bill Reid Gallery is the only public Gallery in Canada dedicated to Indigenous Northwest Coast Art and was established by the Bill Reid Foundation in 2008, to celebrate the Haida master artist Bill Reid 1920 - 1998, and the diverse living cultures of the Northwest Coast. The Gallery honours Bill Reid by exhibiting the Bill Reid SFU Art Collection, and presenting special exhibitions and programs that build bridges between all peoples, including Indigenous and settler populations. Highly informative and visually stunning museum. The two exhibitions that are on display until mid-March tell a story about the immense efforts of yesteryear that have made it possible for the Indigenous art of today, as the upstairs exhibit focuses on language preservation through recording languages on records, and the downstairs focuses on contemporary Indigenous art. For the Bill Reid works, absolutely take the time to work through the smaller pieces that are on display - though all of his pieces are equally worth your time!
2 small levels of excellent west coast indigenous art - paintings, sculpture, jewellery, craft - centred around legendary artist Bill Reid but also including other masters. Nice gift shop. Hosts many events Heart of the City, craft market, talks...
This man has always fascinated me, and I've collected him for over a decade. Finally I was able to travel & visit his gallery. Amazing ! So diverse and well laid out. My only complaint is it's too small. I studied each item & finished it all in 3 hours. Recommended!
A powerful experience, and well worth the visit. There are free hours on some Fridays between 2-5pm! The gift shop is very much worth a look as they have many beautiful things made by local Indigenous artists.
Take a short break from the city to visit this small gallery. Relax and enjoy the experience. An oasis of calm in the heart of the downtown area. The exhibits are beautiful
Thank you for hosting our school trip from South Hill Education Centre. Many of my students are from different cultures and countries. They enjoyed learning about Bill Reid, his artistic journey, and Haida culture and art. The gallery is beautifully laid out, and there are other exhibits from artists who are influenced by Reid's work. Our wonderful tour guide, Sara, and Toonasa in the summer taught us so much!
Great gallery of his different works and stories behind them. It was also a good to see that the gallery also showcased other artists for the indigenous people and their communities. Easy spot to get to right in the heart of the city. He was a master of the art mediums that he worked with. Glad we visited while we were in Vancouver.
Go visit. Terrific gallery, collection and curation. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. My photos don’t do it justice.
Amazing art, jewelry and interesting information about a richly artistic man .. Love that he travelled so much and was a big part of the Toronto scene .. Nice to see his roots here on the West coast .. A beautiful gallery!!
Stopped by on a whim as we headed for the Vancouver Art Gallery and absolutely fell in love. This is an amazing space with a thoughtfully curated collection. Such a wonderful celebration of first peoples art and culture. Definitely worth a stop for art lovers and educators - the lovely folks at the gallery provide some great educational resources both in-person and online.
