Story

We are people on a journey - a journey of acceptance, seeking, and positive faith rather than judgment. You are invited to join with us, as together we participate in worship, education, and service to others; celebrate the joys of life, and care for each other in difficult times. We are an inclusive congregation, welcoming the LGBTQ community, and affirm their participation in the life of the church.

We strive to learn more about our faith through worship, Bible study, service and reflection. We are challenged to interpret scripture for relevance in today's world, and to respond as the Spirit moves us, by putting our faith into action for those in need in our local and global communities.

Bethel is part of the United Church of Christ. We are proud to own the UCC heritage of interpreting scripture as a call for social justice, a commitment to service, and extravagant welcome for all.

I'm rating one of their long-standing community service features(?) that's been help for my family for the past 3 years: Faith Cafe.  Bethel runs Faith Cafe every Sunday from 5-6PM & I've loved the welcoming, warm, and safe atmosphere.  
When you go into the Cafe you're greated by the volunteer church members that week, and of course, Arnie who seems to be one of the people that is fundamental in keeping Faith Cafe going.  Upon entry to the cafe, one can gather a few items from their fruits, veggies, bread, and random shelf stable area, which isn't always available at free meals & is a welcome edition to the meal.
You're served your meal by volunteers whom wait on you, which is a very nice touch.  Arnie and Barb (the 2 consistent and senior members of Faith Cafe) provide a birthday cake & sing to people, there's special meals for Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving & there's even a visit from "Santa" at Christmas time.  The staff really try their best to make you feel welcome each week, and unlike other dinners I've been to, I've never felt unsafe there & if someone does start to get upset there's an immediate volunteer intervention.  I've never seen an actual dangerous situation in the 3 years I've been there.
They offer seconds and take home meals in addition to the meal too.  The meals tend to be, in my opinion, fairly good quality ingredients.  Faith Cafe is the only free meal open on Sundays west of Portland.  If you're "down on your luck" or just would like to have a meal with company, Faith Cafe is a good way to go.  Thank you Bethel for this wonderful community service!

This is a lovely church, with a great mission and very welcoming congregation. They have a good music program, and engage the community in lots of positive ways.

My wife and I looked for a church for over 20 years. Once a devout fundamentalist, I’ve changed. That’s why I liked being accepted “wherever I am on faith’s journey.” Bethel is open to me, science, and new thinking. I learn and grow. But what keeps bringing me back is action, not words. If you are ready to give back or help others you can get started at Bethel. They practice the teachings of Jesus every day. Now I am included in efforts to make a difference helping those in our community.

This is a congregation that is truly service-oriented and interested in helping and loving everyone they encounter. It is refreshing to see a group of open-hearted folks working together to make the world a better and brighter place.

I have been a member of Bethel UCC for over 40 years, so obviously, I think it is a great community of faith.  The congregation has a pronounced social justice ethic that is backed up with action, including a food pantry, feeding program for the homeless, extra food for homeless students at Beaverton High School during school breaks, hosting a PFLAG chapter for Washington County, an ESL program, and regular social justice forums.  It is a progressive Christian church that welcomes all people, no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey.
