When my best friend’s abusive boyfriend kicked her out of their house just two weeks after having his baby, she knew she would need an attorney. First, because she needed to file an order for protection (OFP) against him. Secondly, because she knew there would be a custody and child support battle in court. She found and retained Jacquelyn Lutz of Appelhof, Pfeifer and Hart. Jacquelyn was well versed in everything my friend would need to do, and she guided her step-by-step through the entire process. The OFP hearing was the first time I met Jacquelyn. I was testifying against my friend’s abusive ex in court. Jacquelyn took the time to hear my side of the story and allowed me to explain, in detail, everything I witnessed between them and how he treated me at times. We spent over an hour on the phone that day. Before the hearing, she prepared me by telling what to expect. She was incredibly knowledgeable and helped put my friend, myself and all the other witnesses at ease. She won that hearing, and the order for protection was kept on him for two years. Then she helped my friend prepare for custody, because she knew that was coming next. It did not take long before the paperwork was filed, and he was taking my friend to court for joint custody and parenting time. Because of his long history of abusive behavior and other issues, we knew he could never be alone with a child or baby. Jacquelyn knew she had to win this case to legally protect my friend and her baby, so she strategically guided her through the entire process. After almost a year of motions, extensions and hearings, Jacquelyn did just that. She won. During the entire process, from start to finish, she knew exactly what she was doing. She knew the laws, so she knew what could and could not legally happen. Every move she made, every word she said and every motion she filed was done with precision and with the same end-goal. I was in the courtroom for what turned into the final custody hearing, when my friend’s abusive ex agreed to sign off on custody. My friend, thanks to the brilliant and talented Jacquelyn, had won her custody case. Now, she is free of him in regards to custody. He can never take her to court again for custody of her baby. I first came to Ms. Jacquelyn Lutz of Appelhof, Pfeifer and Hart in October of 2016. It was definitely the worst time in my life and she compassionately spoke with me about my options. Ms. Lutz thoroughly explained the laws, statutes, process and what to expect going forward. What was supposed to be one case, turned into three intricate cases that took a huge toll on me and my family. Ms. Lutz represented me in court on all three cases with a vast knowledge of the laws and how to proceed accordingly. During all three cases she kept me informed, calm, gave me resources to utilize, and (most important) gave me a realistic view of what may come next. Ms. Lutz knew each case required a great deal of knowledge and creative thinking on how to legally proceed forward with each case.
