It was a wonderful experience, I learned more information about black history than I ever did from elementary or secondary school. This museum helped enlighten my knowledge about how smaller towns in Canada played apart in abolation and the underground railroad. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the information given and included interactive games/riddles to participate in. You should definitely go when you get a chance, it's worth it.
I absolutely loved this museum. I had a tour and then was able to explore the gallery. It's not large and the tour and self-guided piece can completed in about 1.5 hours. Parking was very easy in the dedicated lot nearby. No food was available through a cafe or anything which was fine for me. There is also a small gift shop area with an incredible selection of books that allow you to bring the experience home!
Outstanding experience! Definitely take the guided tour- the tour guides are very knowledgeable, and are excited about the history. The building has been lovingly restored, and the museum is filled with one of a kind artifacts. This is a must see in historic Amherstburg!

An important piece of history describing the lives of escaped United States slaves who escaped through the Underground Railroad after they found freedom in Canada. One of several locations of historical interest relating to Canadian Underground Railroad settlers in Southwestern Ontario. Well worth the visit.
This museum is amazing and sobering at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the blacks that escaped to Canada from slavery in the US and how they acclimated to life there. It's very small and funded mostly by donations but still a must visit if in the Ontario area.
Very informative and highly recommended. We visited during the Black History Month. You can literally trace the steps from the river to the museum and the church, like people escaping slavery would've done almost two centuries ago. The wealth of information displayed inside the museum is quite well structured. The entire area is peaceful.
I thought the tour of the Amherstburg Freedom Museum was entirely fascinating with lots of great information shared by our guide.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
