Alta Lake State Park

Story

Alta Lake State Park is a publicly owned recreation area located southwest of Pateros, Washington, at the northern end of 220acre Alta Lake, in the mountainous northwest interior of the state. The 181acre state park and adjacent lake lie beneath towering stone cliffs, formed by glaciation, that rise 1000 feet (304 m) above the valley floor, and carry on up to the top of Old Goat Mountain which sits 4200 ft (1280 m) above the park. A two-mile-long (3 km) road leading to the park, Alta Lake Road, intersects State Route 153, which runs along the Methow River. The park is managed by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.HistoryA jeweler and miner from Wilbur named the lake in 1900 after his daughter, Alta Heinz. In 1951, the city of Pateros gave the property to the state for the establishment of a state park. In 2014, the park was severely damaged during the Carlton Complex Fire, which forced the park to close for five weeks. Recovery efforts are on-going.Activities and amenitiesThe park offers swimming, boating, fishing and sailboarding on Alta Lake, which measures about long and wide. The park has camping and picnicking facilities and of hiking trails. Golf is offered at the nearby Alta Lake Golf Course.

Alta Lake is very calm. It definitely is a small lake, and not a lot of people come here. I was here during the weekend, and like I mentioned not a lot of people were here. If you want to go to Lake Chelan, but you fear the full capacity of the weekend, I would recommend to check out this park. The water is cool, and feels great during a hot day. Available also are nice little hiking trails. There are restrooms, and showers available. If you are hungry, there is a little concession stand available. Make sure to pack your Washington State Discovery pass, or else you have to pay to be there!

Clean campgrounds with close access to a beautiful lake. Not much privacy at any campsite, some have more than others though. Saw staff walking the grounds often, as well as people cleaning bathrooms. Very well kept, and a nice place to stay.

A beautiful little lake to spend the weekend at. The campground is in pretty nice shape after the fire. Can get breezy/windy in the afternoon.

Stopped here on our way to Glacier National Park, and loved this gem of a find. The lake is super picturesque and the ambiance is very peaceful. We wanted to stay longer but we had a schedule to keep. The ranger there was very helpful and friendly, I belove his name was Bob!
