This wasn’t our first time dining at Aka Oni. My husband and I have always chosen this restaurant whenever we’re craving Japanese food because we’ve consistently enjoyed the quality of the food.nLast night, however, the experience left us very disappointed.nThe food itself was still good. The sashimi was fresh as always, and we had no issues after eating. The drink we ordered was delicious with a nice balance of sweet, sour, and salty flavors. The skewers weren’t served very hot, but I assumed the warmer wasn’t working properly and didn’t think much of it. Overall, we were still enjoying our evening.nEverything changed when it was time to pay.nOur bill was around $240, and I left a $15 tip because I felt the service was just average. The staff weren’t rude during the meal, but they also weren’t particularly warm or attentive, they simply did their job without going above and beyond. I thought the tip reflected the level of service we received.nThen our server came back and asked, “Why did you leave such a low tip? Did I do something wrong?”nHonestly, I was shocked. If they genuinely wanted feedback, there are much more professional ways to ask, such as, “Was everything to your satisfaction tonight?” or “Is there anything we could have done better?” Asking a customer directly why they didn’t tip more felt incredibly awkward and inappropriate.nI asked whether the restaurant had a mandatory minimum tip policy because, as far as I know, tipping in Canada is optional. While 15% or more is common for good service, customers should be free to decide how much they want to tip based on their own experience. If tips below a certain percentage aren’t acceptable, then perhaps that policy should be clearly communicated before customers dine.nThe server then told me that the manager had instructed them to come and ask me. That made the situation even more disappointing.nI genuinely love the food at Aka Oni, but this interaction completely changed how I feel about the restaurant. A tip is earned through great service, it’s not something customers should be confronted about after they’ve paid. I hope the management provides better customer service training, whether that’s helping staff provide a warmer, more attentive dining experience or teaching them how to ask for feedback in a respectful and professional way.nUnfortunately, despite how much we’ve enjoyed the food in the past, this experience has made us decide not to return
The food was really worth the price. We spent about $200 for 3 people, which was reasonable. The sashimi was very fresh and the skewers were really tasty, especially the pork intestine. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice.nnIt was quite busy, so we could only stay for about 1.5 hours. We would have liked a bit more time to enjoy our meal, but still a good experience overall. Would still recommend
Long established Izakaya in the Times Square Plaza. Make a res it’s always full! The quality is decent for what you get, atmosphere is a highlight with traditional decor, booths and curtains, j-pop music.nnThe Angus Beef don medium rare was the standout dish by far! Sometimes it’s hit or miss. The Black Diamond “Roll” which is Foie gras topped Unagi was too mega rich, both ingredients having a thick creamy texture against each other, and the oyster bomb roll didn’t go for me, although these were creative.nnComplimentary ice cream, Taro in particular was delicious and great. Go for the atmosphere!
Walked in at 5:30pm right when Aka-oni opened, was told there was a seating limit of 1.5 hours. There were ppl waiting outside when we left. Cozy atmosphere; every table/booth gets a bit of privacy. Since there is no 'Korean button', staff had to checked on us from time to time may be hard to flag down a staff sometimesnnWe ordered some appetizers to share: Takowasa w/ side of wasabi beans, Oyster Bomb sushi rolls, and Crispy Unagi Pancake. All very delicious, highly recommend. My partner and I also share a Beef Nabe aka hot pot in a clear broth, with a side dipping sauce. I would order this again and maybe try the Wagyu version next time!nnAt the end of our meal, staff offered free ice cream for the table, with a choice of Taro and Black Sesame ice cream. Overall, an enjoyable meal :
Quality food and ambiance. Make reservation before you go. Love their Onsen Aburi Chirashi, absolutely incredible. The demon king's inferno ramen could use more heat. Highly recommended.
