I'll give this a Manitoulin 5 stars since it's easily the best meal we had on the island. The chef studied at George Brown and it showed, as his creations tasted like many of the good dishes in a good Toronto restaurant. While pricey, the food is good, the service is efficient and friendly, and the location is outstanding right by the lake so you can see the sun set as you dine for dinner. Went here for a couple of dinners and I think the common themes are the chef does meats really well and the cakes are outstanding. We got: - Meats: The applewood smoked rib eye came with a flourish under a smoking glass, back ribs tasty Jack Daniels rub and beef kebob appetizer that packed an entree level flavour, and all were good. - Pastas: We also tried a couple of pastas that were good - the creamy sauce on the seafood pasta was fine, with the highlight being the perfectly cooked scallops; whole the 3 cheese lasagna was super cheesy and the meat was tasty. - Salads: Garden and caesar salads were fine, though not standouts. - Desserts: The cakes - chocolate, with 3 layers of decadence; and carrot, with a heavy cream cheese to it - were perfect ends to the meal. Overall, pricey but worth it if you want a tasty treat on the island.
Dining at 1890 on our last night on Gore Bay was a genuine treat. Great views and even better food and service. Highly recommended.
1890 was terrific! First restaurant where we could dine in after Covid restrictions lifted and would allow. Highly recommend the food, excellent value, great service Janet- must have been wearing invisible roller skates! Good atmosphere, super clean- overall top notch. We had lamb shank and ribs...both done to perfection. Lentil soup ahead of that was very, very good. Wish this place great success!
This restaurant is a gem on the Island. The food was amazing. I had the Jerk Chicken Pasta which was recommended by the Chef’s Better half. The rum/ginger beer in a smoked glass is the best thing to start off the night. I even was greedy and asked if they wanted to relocate near our home so I wouldn’t have to go without until next summer! A must on the Island!
I am not used to leave poor reviews, so my apologies to the very nice waitress who helped us to get seated and to the cook and kitchen staff. One of the waitresses was very stressed out and almost impolite as we showed up on time. Although we had to wait to be seated, we felt rushed asked about coffee and tea without being asked about desserts, also given the bill when we hadn't finished our desserts!!. The food was okay, nothing special despite all the incredible reviews we can read about the place. It feels like regular customers get a special treatment, but beware if you're not a regular. The view from the terrace is great; but not enough, in my opinion, to justify a long trip to Gore Bay.
What a brilliant little gem in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island! A most decent menu led to a favourite Friday night selection and a very satisfied customer. We need to return soon and have already been warned that spring and summer reservations get booked quickly in advance. Try it out too !!
Great fine dining experience. Had the Jerk Chicken pasta...highly recommend this dish. As there are few fine dining places on Manitoulin, 1890 restaurant is popular and a reservation is needed. Great customer service.
This establishment is warm and inviting to all. You will not regret a visit for dining or a stay at the Inn. Overlooking the bay on the south side of the North Channel you'll be able to see beautiful sunsets that would warm any heart. The evening crickets in the dead silence will set the mood for winding down to a sense of complete relaxation. The owners here are Tammy and Alberto. They are very kind people that welcome you with arms wide open. As far as being "pricey" well that's a matter of lack. Alberto is also the Chef and has quite an outstanding background in the culinary arts which are clearly evident in the flavour, and quality of the meals that are on the menu, right up to the presentation design of the finished platter that is delivered to you in a friendly and timely manner. I had the Seafood Pasta entre and the fish, scallops, and shrimp were all flavourful, tender, and moist the way seafood is meant to be. The rolled pasta was covered in a white cheese sause with a hint of white wine and was absolutely delicious. Maybe a white cheese clam sauce, but whichever, just scrumptious!! I did not have the pleasure of dining in due to the pandemi , but Tammy tells me that it will be very soon when they will open the dining room inside. Reservations would be advantageous to secure a nice seating arrangement. On that note, I hope you find this review helpful and I hope
Food was delicious. You can count on a satisfying meal from Chef Alberto and his team. Service was great, Janet was our waiter and she was amazing. Definitely a must go on Manitoulin.
Amazing! Beautifully renovated with a modern look but keeping the rustic wooden accents. Chef Alberto really knows how to cook delicious and appealing meals! Great selection of wine and local beer. The meat is from a butcher on the Island. It’s right on the edge of the water, nice view of the bay. Can’t wait to go back!
